Legally Blonde The Musical has announced it will close in the West End on Saturday 7 April 2012.

The production, now in its third year in the West End, opened in December 2009 at the Savoy Theatre and went on to win seven major theatre awards including the Whatsonstage.com and Olivier Awards for Best Musical.

Legally Blonde continues its tour of the UK and, according to press material, “plans are in place for an Australian production to open in Sydney later this year”.

The screen-to-stage show transferred from Broadway and premiered in London with Sheridan Smith playing the role of college sweetheart Elle Woods. Smith went on to win the Whatsonstage.com and Olivier Awards for Best Actress in a Musical.

Carley Stenson, who took over the role of Elle in July 2011, will continue until the show’s final performance. Stephen Ashfield will continue as Emmett, Ben Freeman as Warner and Peter Davison continues as Professor Callahan, a role he has played since the show’s premiere.

The musical comedy, which premiered on Broadway in April 2007, is based
on the 2001 Hollywood film in which Reese Witherspoon played California
sorority girl Elle Woods who follows her ex-boyfriend to Harvard Law
School in an attempt to win him back.

Legally Blonde is directed and choreographed by
Jerry Mitchell. The musical has music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe
and Nell Benjamin, book by Heather Hach, set design by David Rockwell,
costume design by Gregg Barnes, lighting design by Kenneth Posner and
Paul Miller, sound design by ACME Sound Partners and orchestrations by
Christopher Jahnke.

It’s produced in the West End by Sonia Friedman Productions, Robert G
Bartner, Ambassador Theatre Group, Bud Martin, Adam Zotovich, Jamie
Hendry Productions, Matthew Byam Shaw and Act Productions.
