Hamlet is a dream role for any actor, and the West End has been treated to a glut in dream Hamlets too: we’ve had David Tennant for the RSC in 2008, Jude Law in 2009, John Simm (at Sheffield) earlier this year as well as Rory Kinnear, who is currently garnering accolades for his recent turn as the great Dane at the National. Michael Sheen, who played Tony Blair on stage and screen, is lined up for the Young Vic next spring. He recently told Vanity Fair magazine that the late Marlon Brando advised him to play the part before he became “too old”. Depp said, “I would like to. I’d really, really like to.” Of course the Golden Globe winner doesn’t say whether he’d consider it for stage or screen, but West End theatregoers can hope that joining such a string of top names might tempt the American actor across the pond for something other than a Tim Burton or Pirates of the Caribbean flick…
