Live Theatre
Newcastle upon Tyne
The JUICE festival kicked off with a performance at Live Theatre of Dennis Kelly’s DNA. Juice is an award winning festival of arts for children and young people. It is funded by Newcastle City Council, Gateshead City Council, Northern Rock Foundation and Arts Council England.
DNA concerns a group of teenagers “who do something bad, really bad, then panic and cover the whole thing up”. Only when the enormity of their action hits them do they begin to strengthen the bonds of friendship. Although the harmony that exits in their lives is short lived. Aimed at an audience of 13 years plus, this reviewer found some of the language used by the characters in the play, tiresome. But to be fair, I was 13 over 30 years ago, and my tastes are somewhat different today. The cast played out their roles with a great deal of flair and maturity, only occasionally losing concentration in their roles, a difficult task in such an intimate space. A young and talented company of actors who proved to their audience that hard work, application and discipline can prove a winning combination.
