Chicago-based Cupola Bobber make a return to the UK with its latest production Way Out West, the Sea Whispered Me opening at the Nuffield Theatre in Lancaster, before going on a short spring tour.
Founded in 1999, Cupola Bobber is a performance collaboration between Stephen Fiehn and Tyler B Myers, who used the action of the sea, both as mythology, as presence, and as inspiration for the production and asked themselves “why is it people are drawn to the sea?”
Fiehn and Myers spent two days walking from Morecambe to Blackpool to experience the activity surrounding the sea as a form of inspiration. They were first inspired by WG Sebald’s The Rings of Saturn, which gives a meandering account of a walk through Suffolk, and throughout the evolution of the performance, the role of the sea in the history of British culture offered profound insight into the mythology of the sea.
Of special interest, however, were seaside resorts and especially those whose heydays coincided with the industrial invention of leisure.
Following its opening in Lancaster, the production will then visit The Green Room in Manchester on Friday 26 February, before transferring to Exeter and Chichester in March.
Way Out West, the Sea Whispered Me appears at the Nuffield Theatre on Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 February at 8pm. Call 01524 594151 for tickets.
