Actor and singer John Barrowman is to star in the UK’s biggest pantomime next year at the Glasgow’s 3,000-seat Clyde Auditorium. The production of Aladdin will compete with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the 2010/2011 offering from the city’s long-running home of traditional Christmas entertainment, the King’s Theatre.

The two shows are being presented by rival producers in what is believed to be the first time large-scale commercial pantomimes have gone head to head in Scotland’s largest city.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will be produced by First Family Entertainment which stages Christmas shows for the UK’s biggest theatre owner, the Ambassador Theatre Group.  It will run at the King’s Theatre from Friday 03 December 2010 to Sunday 09 January 2011. Casting is yet to be announced but is expected to include high profile stars to compete with the television exposure of Torchwood actor Barrowman.

Aladdin will be staged by Qdos Entertainment, the world’s largest pantomime producer who also run the Allan Stewart-helmed annual show at Edinburgh’s King’s Theatre. It will play at the Clyde Auditorium – part of the SECC – from 10 December 2010 to 9 January 2011.

Aladdin will mark Barrowman’s fifth pantomime season with Qdos after playing the title roles in Jack and the Beanstalk (Cardiff – 06/07), Aladdin (Birmingham – 07/08) and Robin Hood (Birmingham – 08/09 and Cardiff 09/10). His pantomime debut was with First Family Entertainment in the 05/06 season playing Prince Charming in Cinderella at the New Wimbledon Theatre alongside television stars Richard Wilson, Susan Hampshire and the comedian Tim Vine.

Barrowman’s appearance will mark a homecoming for the performer, whose family hails from Glasgow. He commented: “I’m
really looking forward to spending the holidays singing, dancing and
having a good laugh in Glasgow next year!” He continued: “I love
playing Aladdin and I think audiences will love everything about this pantomime, especially the amazing 3D effects.”

Michael Harrison, Managing Director of Qdos
Entertainment
’s pantomime division said: “We
are delighted to be bringing John and our superb production of Aladdin
to Glasgow’s SECC.” He continued: “John has smashed box office
records wherever he has played in pantomime and I have no doubt that we
will break even more records in Glasgow and stage an unmissable
pantomime experience.”
