Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (Plymouth & Tour)

An interesting triple bill by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, showcases the Aldridge Award winner and former company dancer Christopher L Huggins’ new piece Anointed.

In a beautiful three-parter, the company’s trademark fusion of athleticism, individualism and elegance is set to music by both Moby and Sean Clements for a compelling and colourful introspective building to a dynamic climax.

In contrast, the opening piece “Hymn” is a tribute to the late Ailey and collaboration between Artistic Director Judith Jamison and actress Anna Deavere Smith.

Verbatim (wordy) voiceover vignettes by Smith drawn from interviews with Ailey, Jamison and the dancers are combined with music by Robert Ruggiere as the piece somewhat ponderously explores the ethos of the African- American troupe, its blues, trad jazz and ballet roots, its place in the history of US prejudice and Ailey’s legacy.

As ever, the bill ends with the iconic “Revelations” which is said to be the most seen and best known modern dance piece.

Vibrant, pulsating and dynamic, Ailey’s 1960 enduring classic is emotional and bound to bring the audience to its feet.

With traditional uplifting African-American religious music – spirituals and gospel – this is fun, fast and fabulous.

The AAADT is full-on, all round theatre with superb lighting and beautiful costuming throughout. Most entertaining.
