As the curtain fell on Alf Ramsey Knew My Grandfather over the weekend, the Gala Theatre in Durham was celebrating attracting a record number of new customers for the production.

Four and a half thousand people saw the show, which told the tale of West Auckland Football Club’s historic win of the first ever football world cup in 1909.  Of these customers, nearly a quarter were new to the theatre, a phenomenal amount for the show which only ran for ten days.

Director, Simon Stallworthy, said, “Alf Ramsey Knew My Grandfather welcomed hundreds of new customers to Gala, in addition to the thousands of returning visitors. We’re delighted that the story reached out and encouraged people who have never previously attended to come along and see the show.  The audience responses were very positive, and we hope to welcome them back in the future.”

Audiences also dug deep during the run of the play, raising a total of £2,101.03 for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, which is raising funds for the Early Cancer Trials Unit at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care.
