Noel Coward’s recently re-discovered play Volcano opened last Thursday (16 August) at the Vaudeville Theatre, where it will run until 29 September.

After the press night performance, the cast and creatives, along with a host of theatre stars and personalities from beyond – including a lady with a special link to playwright Coward – headed to the Waldorf Hilton for the show’s after-party.

Starring Jenny Seagrove (Adela Shelly), Jason Durr (Guy Littleton), Dawn Steele (Melissa Littleton), Finty Williams (Grizelda Craigie) and Perdita Avery (Ellen Danury), the 1956 play explores the lives and love affairs of an ex-pat island community, such as the Jamaican community in which he lived as a tax exile.

Opening night guests included actors Keith Jack, Tracey Childs, Susan Sheridan and Peter Bowles, multi-millionaire owner of Reading Football Club Jogn Madejski. An especially relevant reveller was Blanche Blackwell, a society beauty of the ’50s and ’60s who used to associate with Coward and Bond novellist Ian Fleming – upon whom island lothario character Guy Littleton is supposedly based.
