1st Night Photos: Stephen Fry Flies in for Departure

Following runs at the 2008 Edinburgh Festival and the Summer Play Festival in New York, Dougal Irvine‘s musical comedy Departure Lounge opened last night (30 September) at the new Waterloo East Theatre night for a limited run until 31 October 2010.

The musical, which is directed by Pip Minnithorpe, tells the story of four less than innocent
18-year-olds delayed at Malaga Airport after a week in the sun
celebrating their graduation from school, the boy’s individual memories
of the holiday appear to be at odds, particularly when it comes to
romance and the girl on all their minds.

The cast of Chris Fountain (Hollyoaks), Verity Rushworth (Emmerdale and Hairspray), Jack Shalloo (Hamlet the Musical, Liam Tamne (Hair and Hairspray) and Steven Webb (The Inbetweeners) were joined for their opening night by Stephen Fry and Derren Brown.

The musical, which is Dougal Irvine‘s first, was nominated for all five MTM:UK awards for its 2008 Edinburgh Fringe run and won the award for Best Music. Irvine was recently the lyricist for Britain’s Got Bhangra, a co-production by Rifco Arts and Theatre Royal Stratford East, which has just completed a national tour. His new show, In Touch which was also developed and showcased by Perfect Pitch Musicals, is was being performed at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe by students from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
