There was a veritable storm of celebrities on Shaftesbury Avenue last night, as Singin’ in the Rain opened to critics at the Palace Theatre.

The production, which is directed by Jonathan Church with choreography by Andrew Wright, is based on the classic 1952 MGM film starring Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds. It’s produced in the West End by Stage Entertainment UK and Chichester Festival Theatre (where it premiered last year).

The West End cast is led by Adam Cooper as Don Lockwood, Daniel Crossley as Cosmo Brown, Scarlett Strallen as Kathy Seldon and Katherine Kingsley as Lina Lamont, with Michael Brandon as RF Simpson and Sandra Dickinson as Dora Bailey/Miss Dinsmore, all of whom reprise their roles from the original Chichester production.

Among the guests on opening night were: Janet Street-Porter, Richard Wilson, Anne Widdecombe, Frank Skinner, Stephen Mear, Rupert Goold, Barbara Windsor, Danielle Hope, Lenny Henry, Richard Madeley, Glynis Barber (supporting her Dempsey & Makepeace co-star Michael Brandon), David Tennant, Christopher Biggins and Scarlett’s sister Summer Strallen.
