Talk show legend Jerry Springer took his first bow as Billy Flynn in the West End production of Chicago at the Cambridge Theatre last night (1 June 2009), the same venue which played host to the West End run of the multi award-winning show Jerry Springer – The Opera back in 2003.

Springer, 65, admitted recently that he hasn’t acted on stage since his student days, and has “a voice for newspapers and a face for radio” (See News, 17 Feb 2009). But he certainly got a warm reception from his fellow cast members last night…

Springer is joined in the cast by Leigh Zimmerman, who returns to the role of Velma Kelly, and How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?
finalist Aoife Mulholland who plays Roxie Hart until 11 July when she
is succeeded by Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams (See
News, 26 May 2009).

The current revival of Kander and Ebb’s Chicago opened at the Cambridge Theatre (where the musical’s original London production ran for 603 performances from April 1979) on 28 April 2006, after eight-and-a-half years at the Adelphi Theatre. It won the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production as well as the 1998 Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical.
