”Jesus Christ Superstar” announces 2023 tour
Jesus Christ Superstar is heading out on tour.
The show, which charts the final days of Christ, has music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. It was created as a rock album in 1970 before being staged for the first time the following year.
Directed by Timothy Sheader, the new touring production was first seen at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2016, returning once more the following year and winning the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival in 2017.
It then also ran at the Barbican in the summer of 2019, and was remounted for a socially distanced run during the Covid lockdowns of 2020.
Olivier Award-winning Drew McOnie choreographed the original production, which had musical direction from Tom Deering, design by Tom Scutt, lighting design by Lee Curran and sound design by Nick Lidster for Autograph.
