Kid Critic: Hetty Feather (Duke of York's Theatre)

Our kid critic Edward Macneill, aged 10, reviews the production of Jacqueline Wilson’s book

There is no time to get bored at this show. While we were waiting for everyone to arrive the band played lots of songs, including one about [Hetty Feather author] Jaqueline Wilson. Then the show started.

Hetty Feather is a sad but funny story set in the past. Hetty's mother is poor and can't afford to look after her so she gives baby Hetty to the Foundling Hospital. Hetty travels by train with another baby called Gideon to stay with a foster mother. The train song was brilliant and I felt like I was travelling through each station!

Hetty and Gideon grow up together and are happy until they discover they have to go back to the Foundling Hospital when they are six years old. Hetty does not like the Foundling Hospital but she meets a kind dinner lady called Ida who gives her newspapers to read. Hetty has lots of exciting adventures, including a trip to the circus where she thinks she has found her real mother.

The set has ropes and ribbons which the actors use to climb and do acrobatics. I loved how they used an enormous puppet elephant and performed an acrobatic horse show.

Throughout the story Hetty tries to remember her real name and find her mother. Will you work out who her real mother is before she does? My sister and I really enjoyed the show and so did mum and dad. I recommend Hetty Feather for the whole family.

Hetty Feather runs at the Duke of York's Theatre until 6 September, before embarking on a UK tour. For more information, click here or to book tickets, click here.
