WOS Radio: Edward Seckerson Talks to Kate Royal

The words “Kate” and “Royal” may temporarily be causing some confusion for the Google search engine but to singing aficionados the world over this royal Kate should be the one in pole position.

Winner of three major awards in one year – the Kathleen Ferrier, the John Christie, and the Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artists Award – Kate Royal turns heads and ears wherever she goes. She is now an exclusive EMI recording artist and her latest album – A Lesson in Love – is a prime example of what might now be called “the narrative recital” – a tale of longing, love, and betrayal told in a wonderfully diverse collection of songs from the broadest spectrum of composers.

Despite being the most natural of stage animals, Royal now devotes half of every year to recital work relishing the repertoire, the immediacy, the intimacy of the art form. “I am all about direct expression”, she says, “I enjoy being close to the audience, seeing their eyes, feeling that connection.” In this exclusive audio podcast with Edward Seckerson she takes us through the new album sharing thoughts on the songs and speaking frankly about her priorities.
