Tim Pigott-Smith, Oliver Chris and Lydia Wilson star in Rupert Goold's King Charles III at Almeida

Casting has been announced for Rupert Goold's production of Mike Bartlett's new play King Charles III, which opens at the Almeida Theatre on 10 April 2014 (previews from 3 April).

The play, which imagines the succession of Prince Charles following the death of The Queen, features among the cast Oliver Chris, Adam James, Tim Pigott-Smith and Lydia Wilson.

The rest of the cast comprises Katie Brayben (American Psycho), Richard Goulding (A Mad World My Master), Nyasha Hatendi (The Epic Adventure of Nhamo), Margot Leicester (Long Day's Journey Into Night), Tom Robertson (Othello, Timon of Athens), Nicholas Rowe (Donkey's Years), Nick Sampson (Othello) and Tafline Steen (The Possibilities).

The "controversial" play explores "the people underneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of our democracy, and the conscience of Britain's most famous family".

Oliver Chris has stage credits including One Man, Two Guvnors, Season's Greetings (National Theatre), Women, Power and Politics (Tricycle) and Rain Man (Theatre Royal Bath). His TV credits include The IT Crowd, Hotel Babylon and Green Wing. Adam James' recent stage credits include Rapture, Blister, Burn (Hampstead), 13, Blood and Gifts and Gethsemane (National).

Tim Pigott-Smith's many stage credits include Enron (Chichester/Royal Court/West End), Stroke of Luck (Park), The Tempest (Theatre Royal Bath) and A Delicate Balance (Almeida). Lydia Wilson most recently performed on stage in Hysteria at the Hampstead Theatre. Her other stage credits include Tis Pity She's A Whore (Barbican) and The Heretic (Royal Court).

Featuring designs by Tom Scutt, music by Jocelyn Pook, lighting by Jon Clark and sound by Paul Arditti, King Charles III runs at the Almeida Theatre from 10 April to 31 May (previews from 3 April).
