The Old Red Lion pub theatre in Islington has appointed writer and critic Stewart Pringle as its new artistic director.

Pringle, who has written for publications including WhatsOnStage, Time Out and the Guardian, and co-founded Theatre of the Damned, will take over from Nicholas Thompson in the spring.

Thompson said, "I have no doubt Stewart will do amazing work, it has been a pleasure
working with him as a writer and producer at the Old Red and I wish him all the very best as
he takes the reigns."

The Old Red Lion theatre was founded in 1979 by comedy producer Charlie Hanson.

Recent productions at the venue include The Importance of Being Earnest, which transferred to the Theatre Royal Haymarket in 2012, and The Play That Goes Wrong, which recently won Best New Comedy at the WhatsOnStage Awards.
