Renée Fleming and Dove Cameron to star in The Light in the Piazza at Southbank Centre

Renée Fleming will make her UK stage debut alongside Dove Cameron (currently starring as Cher in Clueless) in the London premiere of The Light in the Piazza.

Directed by Chichester Festival Theatre artistic director Daniel Evans, The Light in the Piazza runs at the Southbank Centre for 20 performances from 14 June next year. The piece will have design by Rob Jones, costumes by Brigitte Reiffenstuel and lighting by Mark Henderson (Gypsy). The cast will be joined on stage by the orchestra of Opera North, conducted by Kimberley Grigsby.

Four-time Grammy winner and Tony nominee Fleming is an opera singer and soprano, who played Nettie in Carousel on Broadway earlier this year, while Cameron's other credits include Disney's The Descendants series. Further casting for the show is to be announced.

Fleming said: "For my London theatre debut, to play Margaret Johnson—a fascinating, deeply human character whose predicament I find incredibly moving—this was an opportunity I couldn't resist."

First produced in 2003, Craig Lucas and Adam Guettel's show is based on a novella by Elizabeth Spencer and is set in 1950s Italy. It follows a wealthy southern woman Margaret (Fleming) whose daughter (Cameron) falls in love with an Italian man. It won six Tony Awards in 2005 including Best Original Score.

The production is the first for new company Scenario Two, founded by John Berry and Anthony Lilley. The company aim to bring together top talent from opera, musical theatre, film, television and beyond.

Berry said: "By bringing together a cast from different genres we hope to appeal to a wide audience and make this limited run of performances a ‘must see event' before it travels to the USA."

Tickets go on general sale on 16 November.
