Alan Rickman dies aged 69

It has been confirmed that actor Alan Rickman has died after a short battle with cancer

The stage and screen actor Alan Rickman has died at the age of 69 following a short battle with cancer, according to the Guardian.

The actor, who starred as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films died in London.

Rickman was known for roles opposite Bruce Willis in Die Hard and for British films such as Truly Madly Deeply, and Love Actually.

The actor won a Bafta for his role as Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves in 1991.

A statement from Rickman's family said: "The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends."

In 1985 Rickman was nominated for a Tony Award for his role as Vicomte de Valmont in Les Liaisons Dangereuses. He also won a Golden Globe, an Emmy and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
