Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse have appointed Michael Mansfield QC to become the chair of the theatres later this year.

The lawyer recently represented 77 of the families during the recent Hillsborough inquests, and has long been associated with theatre alongside his legal work.

In the '80s, Mansfield was part of a group which established the Jacksons Lane venue in Highgate, and was a founding member of Theatre in the Round in Newcastle-under-Lyme whilst at university.

On his appointment as chair to the theatres, he said: "I have developed a huge affinity with Liverpool over the years and I am delighted to be able to twin this with my passion for theatre to support and work with the Everyman & Playhouse into the future."

Other high-profile cases Mansfield has represented include Mohamed al-Fayed during the inquest into the death of Princess Diana, and the families of Jean Charles de Menezes, Stephen Lawrence, and Mark Duggan.
