A new production of the classic musical West Side Story is to run at Leicester Curve over Christmas in 2019.

Nikolai Foster will direct the show, which will have choreography from Ellen Kane and musical supervision from Sarah Travis.

Kane is currently working on the new film adaptation of Cats and was co-choreographer of Groundhog Day. Travis' previous work includes Sweeney Todd and Scrooge the Musical.

Stephen Sondheim, Arthur Laurents and Leonard Bernstein's musical is set in New York City in 1957 and is a reworking of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Songs include "I Feel Pretty", "America" and "Tonight".

Foster and Chris Stafford said: "We couldn't be more excited to tackle this masterpiece on our stage – a stage designed for emotionally charged, epic plays which explore the human condition."

"Since we started working together at Curve, West Side Story has been a show we longed to produce. There couldn't be a better musical to bring people together and introduce new audiences the joy of theatre; regardless of class, culture or age, West Side Story will be the perfect production to celebrate Christmas at Curve."

Tickets will go on sale at 12 noon on 6 and 7 December to Curve supporters and on general sale on 14 December. The piece runs from 23 November 2019 to 11 January 2020. Earlier this week a new production of the musical was also announced by the Royal Exchange in Manchester.
