Given the amount of rain that has fallen on Edinburgh in the past few weeks, the modern day Noah's ark theme of Beef, seems quite apposite. The rains keep falling in Rose William's short play and Mark gathers a flock of lost souls to save them from the floods. Each of the (mostly) strangers has a tale to tell and we get a gimpse of their back story.

The play is intriguing and engaging but not yet fully formed and I wish it had answered a few more of the many questions it raises. The company of young actors is a strong and talented one though I am not sure about some of the physical business which breaks up the scenes.

I suspect that Beef is a bit of a marmite play but I was sufficiently stimulated by the ideas and by the committed performances to notch it up to 4 stars.
