The Sherman Theatre has awarded the Richard Carne Award to Welsh playwright Chris Harris.

Harris has won the award as part of the 2016 New Welsh Playwrights Programme at the theatre, which gives emerging playwrights £1000 in prize money and six months of development support from the theatre.

The New Welsh Playwrights Programme launched in April 2016 with the intention of developing Welsh or Wales-based writers. The scheme received over 100 applications with 14 writers selected to participate in eight sessions designed to develop skills in writing for theatre, led by playwright Brad Birch.

Harris said: "I had never anticipated being the recipient of such a prestigious award. Now, with the invaluable tools and knowledge gained on the programme, equipped with just enough confidence, I can continue to make the work the best that it can be. I'm looking forward with both nerves and excitement at what lies in store…"

Harris' previous credits include Lovely (rehearsed reading at The Other Room) and Winona (Aberystwyth Arts Centre).

There were two other shortlisted scripts written by Jacob Hodgkinson and Tracey Harris, who were given £500 each in recognition of work submitted for the prize.
