The Blues Brothers rolled up into town last night for a three night stint at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle, for a Christmas Party you’re not likely to forget!

With the Magnificent Seven Blues Band and the Sensational Sisters Of Soul in tow, the journey through the classic rhythm and blues hits made famous by Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi has the audience, some in Blues costume, singing and dancing along.

The party atmosphere starts straight away with the more famous of the Blues tracks opening the show in electrifying fashion ("Soul Man", "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love" and "Mustang Sally"). Simon Connolly and Ben Watson as Jake and Elwood have the charm to get you to your feet whether you want to or not.

Yet with the best of the tunes out of the way, it was up to the charisma and strong vocals of Connolly and Watson that keep the audience entertained. Watson bounces around the stage with enthusiasm and energy and entertains the audience with his Geordie impersonations.

The Magnificent Seven Blues Band shine at the back of the stage, raised up so everyone can enjoy their enthusiastic music and watch them strut their stuff whilst strumming and playing their instruments.

The Sensational Sisters of Soul provide good backing vocals and dancing moves, occasionally taking centre stage with their own songs ("Think" and "All I Want For Christmas Is You") to temporarily relieve Connolly and Watson and are able to match the boys' enthusiasm and vocal skills.

Yet the evening wouldn't be complete without some festive songs given the show was called The Blues Brothers Christmas Party and whilst it felt a bit soon (to some of us) to be serenaded with "White Christmas", I'm sure this show will continue to be a hit on its run up to the festive season.

If you're looking for an evening of interactive fun with a sprinkling of laughter, dancing and enjoyable singing, then get along to the Theatre Royal before Wednesday 11th to enjoy the Blues Brothers and their Christmas Party.
