Rupert Murdoch play bound for West End?

A new play about Rupert Murdoch (pictured) is rumoured to be transferring from Australia to the West End next year.

According to the BBC, David Williamson's play Rupert, which premiered in Melbourne last year and featured in the World Stages festival in Washington DC in March, is "slated to open in London's West End in the first half of 2015".

All that's missing is a star, with Williamson revealing that many actors are "scared" of portraying the controversial media baron.

A revival of the play in Sydney next month will star James Cromwell, who featured in the Babe movies.

As for the content of the play, the BBC reveals that Rupert "owes more to Shakespeare's Richard III than recent events in London" – a reference to the Leveson enquiry and phone-hacking trial.

"Richard was someone who through boldness, opportunism, intelligence and charm gets to be king," said Williamson. "Rupert starts with a failing Adelaide newspaper and becomes the most powerful voice in the English-speaking world."
