Site-Specific Shape of Things Staged in Soho

The production, which runs until 6 March, is billed as a “site responsive piece incorporating the setting of the art gallery into the world of the play, with the audience standing as they would in a traditional gallery”.

Set on a college campus in small-town America, The Shape of Things centres on four students engaged in an intense experiment in modern love and art, where nothing is quite what it seems.

The play premiered in June 2001 at London’s Almeida Theatre where it had an extended sell-out run. It later transferred to Broadway and was subsequently filmed with its original cast of Rachel Weisz, Paul Rudd, Fred Weller and Gretchen Mol. A 2004 West End revival closed prematurely after just a month.

Rhapsody of Words was set up by Tom Attenborough (whose assistant director credits include House of Games and Love Story) this year to produce “theatre that matches texts to specific venues in which the core of each play may be best explored”. The Shape of Things will be its inaugural production.
