Photos: Bush Launches Play-sharing Website

The website, bushgreen.org, has been developed with the support of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation. Its stated aim is to “provide playwrights, in the early stages of their careers, with the opportunity to publish their plays online and give practitioners access to plays, both to read and produce.”

The site, which is free to join (although there is a charge to download plays), can also be used by other creatives and agents to network, share ideas and provide feedback. The hope is that playwrights “can find an international audience for their work”.

The Bush says it is the first website of its kind, although sites such as lulu.com and booksie.com currently offer a similar service to novel and short story writers.

Any writers who upload plays to Bushgreen maintain the copyright, although the Bush holds an exclusive licence to publish the play online. It costs £2.58 to download a full length play and £1.38 to download a short play, with individual writers responsible for designating which category their play comes under. The money is then “divided evenly between the Playwright and bushgreen after VAT (15%) and PayPal charges (20p + 2%) have been deducted”.

The Bush is one of the capital’s leading new writing houses, and its literary department receives more than a thousand scripts a year. The Bushgreen website already has over 150 plays available to download, by writers including Nancy Harris, Nick Payne, Ali Taylor and Nick Moran.
