Workshops for a new musical adaptation of Zorro, in which Tony Award winner Frances Ruffelle and Tim Howar crossed swords (See The Goss, 2 Dec 2005), have reportedly gone very well. Producer Adam Kenwright is hoping to mount a full-scale production at a West End venue in late 2006. A spokesperson told Whatsonstage.com: “The workshops went very well, and Zorro will be opening in the West End, we hope, in 12 months’ time. We don’t know where yet, it depends which theatres are available, and nothing is final yet with regards to cast.” The story of the Mexican masked man has spawned myriad films, including 1998’s The Mask of Zorro and its recently released sequel The Legend of Zorro, starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta Jones. Music for this latest Zorro is by the Gypsy Kings and John Cameron.
