Protests about the controversial “anti-Sikh” play Behzti have succeeded in closing more than The Door at Birmingham Rep. After Sikh demonstrators rioted at last Saturday’s performance, the theatre’s website was inundated with messages for and against its subsequent decision to cancel the remainder of the play’s run in the studio space (See News, 22, 21 & 20 Dec 2004). A notice on the site’s home page now informs visitors: “We have taken our message board off-line for the time being due to overload on comments regarding Behzti. Some comments were overtly racist and many were inappropriate for the many young people who access this site. Whilst we encourage debate and discussion over this topic, we think certain views are better discussed in a chat room rather than on a public access message board.” Meanwhile, today’s Stage reports that the Commission for Racial Equality plans to host an emergency meeting with religious leaders in the new year to prevent any repeats of last weekend’s violence. The debate about artistic expression and censorship continues on the Discussion Forum.
