Following the lead of The Full Monty and, next year, Billy Elliot, 2002’s Bend It Like Beckham looks like the next hit Brit flick to make the crossover to stage musical. The film’s director and producer, Gurinder Chadha and Deepak Nayar, have been working on raising money for the stage adaptation. Set in Hounslow in west London, the film tells the story of a teenaged Indian girl who dreams of becoming a professional footballer against the wishes of her traditional parents. According to Nayar, elements of the Punjabi culture will be brought more to the fore in the stage version. The film starred Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley, who’s gone on to wider fame in Pirates of the Caribbean and Love Actually, but they’re unlikely to appear in the musical.
