Horrible Histories Premieres at Garrick, Deary Adapts & Stars
Horrible Histories – Barmy Britain, adapted from Terry Deary’s bestselling series of children’s books, will premiere in the daytime slot at the Garrick Theatre (the new home of Chicago) early next year.
Speaking to Whatsonstage.com at a launch event held at the Houses of Parliament earlier today, author Deary – who has co-written the stage version with Neal Foster and Ciaran McConville – described the project as a “medley” of his much-loved book series, which now numbers over 50 titles.
“It all started when my publisher asked me to write a joke book about history, but I found the facts more interesting than the jokes,” he said.
Deary, who is also an actor, revealed that he will be taking to the stage himself at the Garrick to play the male role in the two-hander adaptation for the “odd week”.
Actors Benedict Martin and Lauryn Redding will play the roles of ‘Rex’ and ‘Queenie’ when the show opens. It will have an open-ended run, with Deary adding that he hopes it will still be in residence next Christmas.
