Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin's musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda opened last night (24 November 2011, previews from 25 October) at the Cambridge Theatre, transferring to London following an acclaimed season at Stratford-upon-Avon last Christmas.

The story of the little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers, Matilda is directed by Matthew Warchus, whose previous West End credits include the large-scale Lord of the Rings musical, Art, God Of Carnage, Speed-The-Plow and another musical adaptation, Ghost the Musical, currently playing the West End's Piccadilly Theatre.

Bertie Carvel plays the formidable head mistress Miss Trunchbull, accompanied by Lauren Ward, Paul Kaye and Josie Walker. Eleanor Worthington Cox, Sophia Kiely, Cleo Demetriou and Kerry Ingram share the role of Matilda.
