Webber Returns to Hospital with Chronic Infection

Andrew Lloyd Webber, who recently underwent treatment for prostate cancer (See News, 26 Oct 2009), has been readmitted to hospital due to a post-operative “chronic infection”.

A statement posted yesterday evening on the composer’s official website reads: “Andrew has been readmitted to hospital tonight following his operation for prostate cancer. He has been advised that while the operation was entirely successful, he has developed a post-operative ‘chronic infection’ which needs immediate treatment.”

Despite the setback however, the statement goes on to say that “he still hopes to back at work in the New Year”.

Lloyd Webber revealed he had prostate cancer last month, although it’s believed the diagnosis was made several weeks previously, around the time of the launch of his new musical Love Never Dies, the sequel to his global hit The Phantom of the Opera (See News, 8 Oct 2009).

Love Never Dies is due to start rehearsals in January, ahead of its world premiere at the Adelphi Theatre on 9 March 2010 (previews from 20 February).
