1st Night Photos: Abbott Makes Kwei-Armah’s Day

Abbott – who was the first black woman to be elected to the House of Commons – actually appears herself in Kwei-Armah’s play (via a filmed inset), which centres on the campaign of a black London Mayoral candidate.

Seize the Day joins Roy Williams’ Category B in rep, with the third and final play in the season, Bola Agbaje’s Detaining Justice, due to open on 30 November (previews from 25 November).

Kwei-Armah, who also directs, was last at the Tricycle in 2008 with Let There Be Love, which returned following a sell-out run. His break-through play was 2003’s Elmina’s Kitchen, the first of a triptych for the National Theatre which won him the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright and made him the first black Briton to have a play staged in the West End when it transferred the following year.

Not Black and White is performed by an ensemble cast comprising: Jimmy Akingbola, Aml Ameen, John Boyega, Karl Collins, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Abhin Galeya, Jaye Griffiths, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Amelia Lowdell, Cecilia Noble, Rebecca Scroggs, Robert Whitelock.
