Photos: Come Join Cabaret’s First Anniversary Party

Rufus Norris’ acclaimed revival of Kander and Ebb musical Cabaret officially celebrated its first birthday at the West End’s Lyric Theatre last week. Though the show opened on 10 October 2006 (previews from 23 September), the candles were blown out on the show’s first birthday cake by new cast members – including Julian Clary and Amy Nuttall – on 1 November 2007, when Norris also stopped in to join in the party along with guests including newscaster Michael Buerk.

Norris’ revival turns Weimar Berlin into a dark and sexually charged haven of decadence, its morally ambiguous inhabitants determined to keep up appearances as the real world – outside the sanctuary of the cabaret – prepares for the chaos of war. Based on the stories of Christopher Isherwood and the play by John Van Druten, Cabaret premiered on Broadway on 1966 and in 1972 was made into an Oscar-winning film starring Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles, Michael York as Cliff and Joel Grey as the Emcee.

In addition to Clary and Nuttall, the new Cabaret cast also features Angela Richards, Barry James and Michael Beckley. The production is designed by Katrina Lindsay, choreographed by Javier de Frutos, who won an Olivier for his efforts, and produced by Bill Kenwright. It’s currently booking until 1 March 2008.
