Plans to bring Broadway hit Wicked to the West End seem to be well advanced. The latest prediction is that it will open at the Apollo Victoria in autumn 2006. Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the musical fantasy rewinds from The Wizard of Oz to tell the back story of the warring witches. The stage production opened in October 2003 at New York’s George Gershwin Theater, where it’s still running. It has a score by Stephen Schwartz (Pippin, Godspell) and book by Winnie Holtzman and is directed by Joe Mantello who would recreate his production in the West End. Mantello has previously directed Richard Greenberg’s play Take Me Out at the Donmar Warehouse before its New York transfer.
