A musical about the life, loves and death of the late Princess Diana premiered in Saarbruecken, Germany this past weekend. The show, entitled Lady Diana: A Smile Enchants the World, is all in German but stars British actress Karen Gillingham. It is the first musical to cover the life of the princess, and includes details of her bulimia, her estrangement from Prince Charles and her death in a Paris car crash in 1997. The producer Karl-Heinz Stracke was reportedly warned not to portray living members of the royal family on stage, for fear of legal action. For the most part, he has heeded that advice, although the Prince of Wales does feature twice, both times with his back to the audience. Stracke is now planning to tour the musical in Germany, Austria and Switzerland with a possible British transfer in three to four years’ time.
