Kander & Ebb’s Steel Pier comes to Union, 6 Nov

Steel Pier, the 1997 musical from the writers of Chicago and Cabaret, will make its ‘European professional premiere’ at the Union Theatre with a limited run from 6 to 24 November 2012 (previews from 31 October).

It’s been 15 years since the Kander and Ebb show’s Broadway debut, when it was nominated for 11 Tony awards.

Set in 1930s Atlantic City, Steel Pier is a dance heavy musical that tells the story of dancer Rita Racine and her quest to escape the dance marathon circuit. Loosely based on the film, They Shoot Horses Don’t They?, it’s a romantic tale of love, bribery and deceit.

Heading the cast as Rita Racine is American Sarah Galbraith, who was Christine’s understudy in The Phantom of the Opera in Las Vegas and also appeared in the show on Broadway. Her other roles including starring as Ariel in a concert version of The Little Mermaid on tour in Japan with the Tokyo Philharmonic, and Johanna in Sweeney Todd.

The cast also includes: Jay Rincon, Aimie Atkinson, Ian Knauer, Ian Kirton, Samuel Parker, Clare Louise Connolly, Brett Shiels, Amy Anzel, Rob Lines, Lisa-Anne Wood, Ben Beard, Louise Roberts, Natalie Douglas, Eithne Bryan, Connor Macnamara, Sheila Grant, Simon Mayhew and Rebecca Orwell.

Paul Taylor-Mills will direct the production, with Richard Jones as choreographer. This will be the third time the duo have worked together, with the last time being a revival of Rent at the Greenwich Theatre. This will be the first time the two have returned to Union Theatre since their revival of Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
