1st Night Photos: Wests Reunite for A Number

Caryl Churchill was among the guests at the Menier Chocolate Factory last night (4 October 2010, previews from 29 September) to see the first major London revival of her 2002 play about cloning, A Number.

The new production, directed by Jonathan Munby based on his 2006 staging at Sheffield Crucible, features father and son Timothy and Samuel West (who originally invited Munby to direct him and his father in the piece at Sheffield), who play a father and his three sons – two of which are clones of the first.

A Number had its world premiere in 2002 at the Royal Court, directed by Stephen Daldry and starring Michael Gambon and Daniel Craig.

Prior to the 2006 run, the two Wests had only appeared together in one previous stage play, English Touring Theatre’s 1997 staging of Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, in which Samuel played Hal to Timothy’s Falstaff.

A Number continues at the Menier until 5 November 2010.
