Doug Wright’s multi award-winning one-man play I Am My Own Wife is gearing up for a UK premiere. It’s expected to open in the West End before the end of the year, though a venue has yet to be announced. Jefferson Mays, who will reprise his performance in London, won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Actor for I Am My Own Wife, in which he plays a resilient German transvestite as well as dozens of other characters including one based on the author. Wright’s play also became the first solo piece to win the Tony for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for drama. Directed by Moises Kaufman, I Am My Own Wife was first seen in New York at Off-Broadway's Playwrights Horizons in spring 2003. In December 2003, it transferred to Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre where it ran for ten months. At the start of this year, the play launched a tour of the US.
