Although the next production – the stage musical adaptation of MM Kaye’s The Far Pavilions (See News, 26 Oct 2004) - has already been announced for the West End’s Shaftesbury Theatre, current resident Bat Boy - The Musical has so far resisted making a closure announcement. Following largely negative reviews, poor houses and the exit of the show’s UK partners, the show was predicted to close at the beginning of this month. Instead, in a gutsy show of determination, American producer Michael Alden decided to extend its booking period by three and a half months up to 14 February 2005 (See News, 1 Oct 2004). He now tells Whatsonstage.com that Bat Boy is still slated to continue at the theatre until that date, after which it’s a case of “watch this space”. It may extend a bit further still at the 1,400-seat Shaftesbury – though it will have to be out by 24 March when The Far Pavilions begins previewing - or perhaps transfer to a more suitably intimate space for a small-scale show. You never know - as Alden himself puts it, “Bat Boy has surprised everyone before!”
