Casting is continuing this month for the world premiere stage adaptation of Disney's Mary Poppins. Who will follow in the footsteps of Julie Andrews, who immortalised the eponymous nanny in the 1964 film classic? Joanna Riding (who won this year's Best Actress in a Musical for My Fair Lady) took the role in a showcase performance last month, when she was joined by the likes of Julia McKenzie, Alex Jennings, Claire Moore and, playing the Dick Van Dyke role of chimneysweep Bert, show songwriter Anthony Drewe. Who will be signed up for the final cast is still to be seen - and, chances are, London audiences may not be the first to see in any case. Although the musical, which is being co-produced by Cameron Mackintosh and Disney Theatrical Productions, is now confirmed to open at the West End's Prince Edward Theatre on 15 December 2004 (See Today's News), we also hear that, it's likely to have a two to three-month run at the Bristol Hippodrome following rehearsals, which are due to start in July 2004. If the Bristol gig comes off, it will be the first time impresario Mackintosh has held an out-of-town tryout for one of his shows.
