Edinburgh Hit Iron Rings in Royal Court New Year

By • West End
As previously predicted (See News, 29 Aug 2002), Rona Munro's award-winning psychological drama Iron will receive its London premiere at the Royal Court. The 2002 Edinburgh Festival hit, a Traverse Theatre production, is now confirmed to open at the Court's Jerwood Theatre Downstairs on 27 January 2003 (previews from 11 January), continuing to 1 March.

Josie is visiting her mother Fay in prison for the first time. She's not seen her for 15 years, not since the day her mother was taken away when she was 10 years old. Fay is in prison for murder. A murder Josie cannot remember and Fay has always tried to forget.

Directed by Roxana Silbert, the Iron cast features Helen Lomax, Louise Ludgate, Ged McKenna and Sandy McDade, who won The Stage award for Best Actress at this year's Edinburgh Fringe for her performance as an institutionalised prison inmate. The production is designed by Anthony MacIlwaine, with costumes by Alex Eales, lighting by Chahine Yavroyan and sound by Matt MacKenzie.

Rona Munro's previous work includes Your Turn to Clean the Stair for the Traverse, as well as Bold Girls, The Maiden Stone and Snake. For film and television, she has written Ladybird Ladybird and the Golden Globe nominated Aimee and Jaguar. Her latest project is the film Rehab.

The Royal Court has already hosted the London transfer of David Greig's Outlying Islands, another Traverse production, which won a Fringe First at this year's festival.

The Court's current Downstairs production, Caryl Churchill's A Number - starring Michael Gambon and Daniel Craig and directed by Stephen Daldry - concludes its run on 16 November 2002 and is followed by Anthony Neilson's alternative Christmas show, The Lying Kind, from 23 November 2002 to 11 January 2003.
