Fans of Samantha Spiro's star turn in the Donmar Warehouse's revival of Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along have been wondering when they'll be able to catch her next musical. The good news is that Spiro is lined up for another Sondheim outing in a new production of Sweeney Todd; the bad news is it's not exactly a traditional version and it's not on stage either. Spiro will play Mrs Lovett, pie-making partner of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, in a new film directed by Francesca Joseph. With more than a nod to recent Brit flick Lucky Break, the new film is said to follow the fortunes of a small opera company who put on the famous Stephen Sondheim musical in a maximum security prison. Spiro won tremendous acclaim for her part in Merrily, winning both the Olivier and Awards for Best Actress in a Musical earlier this year.
