Honk! , a musical based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen, will be staged at the National's Olivier Theatre for Christmas, directed by Julia McKenzie. The show opens on December 16, following previews from December 11.

McKenzie, best known as a musical actress for her performances in such shows as Side by Side by Sondheim (in London and on Broadway), and the National Theatre's productions of Guys and Dolls (playing Miss Adelaide) and Sweeney Todd (playing Mrs Lovett), first staged a different production of Honk! at Scarborough's Stephen Joseph Theatre.

Earlier versions of the show were also seen at The Watermill Theatre in Newbury (in 1993) and the Bay Street Theatre in New York (in 1995). Currently, another production of the show can be seen at the Landor Theatre, a fringe theatre above a pub in Clapham, South London, running to October 9.

The book and lyrics to Honk! are by Anthony Drewe and music by George Stiles. The team previously wrote Just So, which was originally produced at The Watermill Theatre and subsequently at London's Tricycle Theatre, under the auspices of Cameron Mackintosh. More recently, Goodspeed Opera House's Norma Terris Theatre in Chester, Connecticut staged a revised version.
