Terror Season Returns for Halloween, Moves to Soho
Experimental theatre company The Sticking Place return to scare London this Halloween with their eighth annual Terror season, which this year moves from its traditional haunt at Southwark Playhouse to the Soho Theatre’s new Downstairs cabaret space.
This year’s season presents five new horror plays centred around the theme “Love me to Death”. The nightly line-up consists of The Waiting Mortuary by Dave Florez, Lucy Kirkwood‘s Mad About the Boy, Wormy Close by Carl Grose, Jack Thorne‘s The Gong and Tom Holloway‘s If I Should Stay I Would Only Be In Your Way.
Director Hannah Eidinow will helm Kirkwood and Florez’s plays whilst Matt Peover directs the other three. Eidinow has directed five Fringe First award-winning plays at Edinburgh Fringe – including two this year – one of which was a new play by Dave Florez, Somewhere Beneath It All, A Small Fire Burns Still. Matt Peover has been joint artistic director of Liquid Theatre since 2002 with credits including Powder Monkey by Amanda Dalton and The Golden Lizard devised with Henry Paker and Mike Wozniak.
Cabaret acts, hosted by Desmond O’Connor and Merrill Grant will vary from night to night. Confirmed appearances include Jonny Woo, Dusty Limits and Laura Corcoran of duo Frisky and Mannish.
Terror began in 2004 at Southwark’s Union Theatre prior to moving to Southwark Playhouse. The season was nominated for a 2007 Peter Brook Empty Space Award. Previous seasons have included the world premiere of Mark Ravenhill’s Ripper, Anthony Neilson’s first play Normal and the first ever revival of Noel Coward’s The Better Half – a manuscript rediscovered by academics having originally written for London’s Grand Guignol in 1922.
Terror 2011 is created by Adam Meggido, the artistic director of The Sticking Place and co-creator of Edinburgh Fringe favourite Showstopper! The Improvised Musical which plays eight dates at the Ambassadors Theatre until 12 October prior to a national tour. The season is prodced by Seabright Productions and The Sticking Place with design by performance artiste and music hall vaudevillian Vicky Butterfly.
