The Royal Shakespeare Company have today (13 September 2011) announced the four young actresses who will share the title role in the musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda.

The show opens at the Cambridge Theatre on 22 November 2011 (previews from 18 October) having played a sell-out Christmas season at the RSC’s
temporary Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon last Christmas.

Newcomers to the London stage, ten-year-old Eleanor Worthington Cox from Merseyside and 11-year-old Sophia Kiely from London, join 11-year-old Cleo Demetriou whose credits include The Sound of Music and Les Miserables, and 12-year-old Kerry Ingram who made her debut playing Matilda in the original Stratford cast.

Today also marks the sixth Roald Dahl Day – on what would have been his 95th birthday – and is a celebration of the work, life and legacy of one of the world’s best-loved storytellers. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach first being published.

The Matildas join an adult company which includes Bertie Carvel, Paul Kaye, Josie Walker and Lauren Ward who, as previously reported, reprise their roles from the Stratford production.

The three teams of eight young performers who make up the rest of the young company were today announced as: Thomas Atkinson, Jake Bailey, James Beesley, Ruby Bridle, Oonagh Cox, Jemima Eaton, Alicia Gould, Zachary Harris, Callum Henderson, Fleur Houdijk, Jamie Kaye, William Keeler, Lily Laight, Katie Lee, Isobelle Molloy, Jemima Morgan, Toby Murray, Alfie Manser, Lucy May Pollard, Annabel Parsons, Ellie Simons, Louis Suc, Jaydon Vijn and Ted Wilson.

The four young actresses who play Matilda were today introduced to the media during an event at the London Eye.
