John Leguizamo Brings Ghetto Klown to Charing Cross

By • West End
Emmy Award-winning actor John Leguizamo will transfer his one-man Broadway show Ghetto Klown to the Charing Cross Theatre for 17 performances from 27 October (previews from 25 October) to 12 November 2011.

Directed by Fisher Stevens, Ghetto Klown earned Leguizamo a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance, an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Solo Performance and a Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance during its Broadway run at New York's Lyceum Theatre earlier this year.

Ghetto Klown promises to lead audiences on a "fever-pitch adventure" taking in both where Leguizamo has been and the colourful characters that have populated his life. The piece spans memories from growing up in Queens to the early days of his acting career during the 1980's avant-garde theatre scene, and on to the sets of major motion pictures and his roles opposite some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

Leguizamo, who played Toulouse-Lautrec in Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 Oscar-winning musical film Moulin Rouge, is perhaps best known as the voice of Sid the Slot in the animated film series Ice Age, which has grossed almost $2 billion worldwide and which is currently producing its fourth instalment.

Mambo Mouth, Leguizamo's first solo show won both Obie and Outer Critics Circle Awards for its Off-Broadway run. His second one-man show, Spic-O-Rama played Chicago and New York, followed in 1998 by Freak which was aired on HBO, directed by Spike Lee, and won Leguizamo an Emmy. He returned to Broadway in 2001 with Sexaholix a Love Story which was nominated for both an Outer Critics Circle Award and a Tony.

Ghetto Klown is produced in London by Steven M Levy, Sean Sweeney and Arnold Engelman for WestBeth Entertainment in association with the Soho Theatre.
