1st Night Photos: Politicos Come Out for Minister

Politicians were out in force at the Gielgud Theatre last night (27 September 2010) for the gala performance of the West End transfer of Yes, Prime Minister, the stage adaptation of the much-loved TV comedy.

Political heavyweights including Theresa May, Iain Duncan Smith, Nigel Lawson and presenter David Frost (himself the subject of a recent West End play, Frost/Nixon) mingled with original cast members Derek Fowlds and Diana Hoddinott at the after party, which was also attended by the likes of Sheila Hancock, Patricia Routledge and Robbie Coltrane.

Yes, Prime Minister, which is adapted from the classic TV sitcom by original scriptwriters Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn (who also directs), premiered at the Chichester Festival Theatre earlier this year (See Review Round-up, 25 May 2010) and transfers to the West End replete with stars Henry Goodman and David Haig.

Prime Minister Jim Hacker (Haig), Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby (Goodman) and his Principal Private Secretary Bernard Woolley face a country in financial meltdown, with the only prospect of salvation coming from morally dubious allies – leading to “deliciously comic consequences”.
