1st Night Photos: Friel Sparkles at Haymarket

Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the second in the Theatre Royal Haymarket’s season of in-house productions, opened last night (29 September, previews from 9 September), with first night guests including Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, stars of its predecessor in the season Waiting for Godot.

Directed by Sean Mathias, who acts as artistic director of the entire season, Breakfast at Tiffany’s is adapted by Samuel Adamson. Though Adamson draws more on the original source of Truman Capote’s 1958 novella, comparisons will inevitably be drawn with the iconic 1961 film classic starring Audrey Hepburn.

On stage, Anna Friel stars as the charming and outspoken society girl Holly Golightly, who Friel recently described as “one of my all-time favourite heroines” (See News, 15 May 2009).  The story centres on Golightly’s friendship with an aspiring writer (Joseph Cross), her brownstone apartment neighbour, over the course of a single year in 1940s Manhattan.
