In an interview with Whatsonstage.com shortly after taking over the Donmar Warehouse (See “Changing of the Guard”, Features, 21 Jul 2003), Michael Grandage was specific about his ideal length of tenure: “Five years is a good cycle. In five years, you have an opportunity to express and execute a vision and move a theatre, whether it's been successful or poor, into a new direction. In five years, you certainly should be able to achieve what you want to achieve.”

Now that his first five years at the Donmar Warehouse is coming to a close, at yesterday’s press briefing to announce his future plans for the theatre – including purchase of its Covent Garden property and a separate year-long, star-studded residency in the West End (See News, 10 Sep 2007) – he recalled his previous interview comments with a smile before declaring “I’ve changed my mind … I’m staying on.”
